Launch Alert: ULA Atlas V completing first Space Force mission today

Thursday, March 26, 2020 is launch day at Space Launch Complex-41 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. United Launch Alliance is completing the Sixth Advanced Extremely High Frequency, or AEHF-6, mission for the United States Space Force.

The sixth and final AEHF deployment completes an overall mission to position satellites that “provide global, survivable, protected communications capabilities for strategic command and tactical warfighters operating on ground, sea and air platforms,” according to ULA.

The first-ever mission for the newly created department of the Air Force will rely on ULA’s Atlas V 551 rocket. The two-hour launch window opens at 2:57 p.m. EDT today, and 45th Weather Squadron issued an 80% launch mission execution forecast yesterday for today’s mission.

ULA has successfully deployed five other Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellites over the last decade. While the Atlas V rocket will launch sometime between 2:57 p.m. and 4:57 p.m. today if all goes as planned, the satellite onboard won’t be deployed until around five hours into the mission.

You can watch the live broadcast of ULA’s AEHF-6 mission for the U.S. Space Force Space and Missile Systems Center starting at 1:35 p.m. EDT:
